Johannes Vermeer
Christ in the House of Martha and Mary 1654-55 (?)
Oil on canvas, 61 x 56 inches National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh

Jesus breaks through the religious culture by allowing a woman to act like a man when she sits at Jesus’s feet. This companion story to last week’s account of The Good Samaritan lifts up for us the first part of the Great Commandment to love God, just as the Samaritan story unfolds the second part, to love our neighbor. Two marginalized persons, the Samaritan and Mary, move from the margin to the center.

The Gospel, Luke 12:38-42 and the sermon.
