Last week we spoke about the U-Turns that we need to take in our understanding of what John the Baptist means by repentance–turn your way of thinking around. The prophets themselves make U-Turns from chastising the people for their wrongdoing, for their idolatry and then shifting towards shouts of comfort and joy such as we know from George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.” We talk about shifts in perspective that the prophets themselves make to illustrate that God’s grace is not a reward for us getting it right; rather it gives us the power to see things differently because we’re loved and forgiven.
